After graduating from Sacred Heart Academy High School, Vernon enrolled at the University of Portland with a legal career in his sights. College plans were soon thwarted when he met Jocille Gregory, who became his beloved wife in 1955. They were married 62 years, until her passing in 2017. Vernon was a proud and active union member while employed by The Statesman Journal newspaper for 17+ years. He later returned to his earlier interest in the legal sphere working for Legal Aid of Salem. There, he played an instrumental role in assisting the immigrating post-war refugee communities of Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand.
Vernon was always in service to his church, his family, and the greater community.
