Sublimity Oregon Vincent John Vince Etzel was born and raised on Fern Ridge Road, just east of Stayton. He was number 5 of 8 children born to Peter T. and Philomena Etzel on January 25, 1920. He attended Fern Ridge School, District 12, graduating at the top of his eighth grade class of three in 1934. Vince farmed many years with his three brothers, Ted, Al, and Pete, known as the Etzel Brothers Farm. The Etzel brothers farmed together until 1974. They ran a very diversified operation, raising strawberries, cherries, prunes, and grain. They also raised sheep, cows, hogs, and horses. Once irrigation became available, they also grew green beans and sweet corn. In 1975, Vince began farming independently, and was a very meticulous and successful farmer. He actively managed his farm until he was 87 years old. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sublimity his entire life and was a 70 year member of Knights of Columbus, Council 2439. Vince was a master guitar player with the Etzel Family Band. He was an avid outdoors man; he loved to hunt, fish, ski, and almost any other outdoor activity. He also loved his horses. He was a decorated WWII veteran from 1942 1945, serving from Alaska and into the European Theatre. Although Vince never married, he considered his 42 nephews and nieces his family. His family will truly miss him. Vince is survived by his sister, Louise Porter; brother, Pete (Jeannie) Etzel; and 42 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Tillie and Phil; and brothers, Leonard, Ted, and Al. Visitation for Vince will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fri., July 25 at Weddle Funeral Services in Stayton.
