Robert Olin Stancliff

Robert Olin Stancliff June 5, 1915 December 12, 2015 Mt. Angel, Oregon Robert Olin Stancliff was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather. He was born to Clifton and Talitha Stancliff June 15, 1915, in Bakersfield, California. As an intelligent, strong, active youngster growing up in Bakersfield, Robert knew early on that his desire was to serve God. He spent 3 ½ years active in the ministry, and had a lifelong purpose he loved to share with others, “My main aim in life is to please God. As a young man of 26, Robert married the love of his life, Frances Coleman, in 1941. Shortly thereafter he was drafted into the army and headed across the seas to serve during WW II, leaving behind his wife and firstborn, Steve. Although his personal beliefs kept him out of combat, Robert used his creative mind to serve his country and his God. He received the “Legion Of Merit-Legionnaire” Medal and the following quote was in the citation: “Stancliff designed and constructed these inexpensive and highly efficient appliances which improved the comfort and medical care of thousands of patients receiving treatment in the hospital.” Returning to civilian life, Robert and Frances spent the next years raising their six children; Steve, Mike, Jim, Linda, Ron and Phil in California and Oregon. Encouraging each of them to choose God as the center of their lives. After their first family was raised, they made their house a home to their daughter Linda and her girls, Lori, Tami and Mari; helping Linda raise the girls. Family gatherings will be remembered with Grandpa at the head of the table for the meals. The frequent family visits over the years were always loud, conversations were lively and sometimes marked with interesting debates but—always were full of laughter and furnished with delicious home cooked food that Grandma had lovingly prepared. Throughout the years, amongst other things, Robert worked as a mechanical engineer with his father, a rancher, a welder, the forest service and security for a lumber mill. Robert loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hiking, hunting, fishing, and rock hunting. He had his own drafting table where he loved to draw up plans for different things. And of course, he always had the soft spot in his heart for his grand, great and great-great grandkids. As the years passed and Robert’s memory started to fail and his body began to crumble; he was always able to point his finger at you, look right into your eyes, and say, “My main goal in life is to please God”. Even in his last days, at the age of 100, Robert brought laughter and happiness to the people who worked with him as he zoomed backwards up and down the hall in his wheelchair. Robert passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 12, 2015 at the Providence Benedictine Home in Mt. Angel, Oregon; he quietly left this earth to enter the heavenly gates. We have peace knowing that Robert can say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith,” II Timothy 4:7. Robert was proceeded in death by his loving wife Frances, his son Ron Stancliff, grandkids Kelly Stancliff, Jamie Barrett, Dale Stancliff, and great granddaughter Morgan Stancliff. He is survived by his brother Jack Stancliff, Sister Laurena Escola, sons Steve, Mike, Jim and Phil Stancliff, daughter Linda Barrett and numerous grandchildren.
