Robert G. Bob Schachtsick

Robert G. Bob Schachtsick July 19, 1928 November 1, 2009 Stayton, Oregon  Bob was born in Portland, Oregon to Gilbert and Irma (Gartner) Schachtsick. In 1937 Gilbert married Mae Duffy, and in 1939 the family moved to Stayton. Bob attended Stayton Grade School and Stayton High School. During his school years he worked at Virg and Sue Tuels Food Market. In 1946 Bob joined the Navy and served on the islands of Guam and Truk. Following the Navy, Bob attended the University of Oregon, and the Oregon College of Education. On February 3, 1951, he married Donna Susbauer, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, in Sublimity. They had six children. During his early working years, and first years of marriage, Bob worked for Stayton Canning Company, Phillipi Ford, and C.S. Morgan and Son Oil Distribution. In 1955 he opened the Richfield Service Station at the corner of First and Washington. In 1957 he was joined in business by John Mynatt, replaced in 1959 by Bill Trask. Bob and Bills Richfield (later Becoming Arco) was a longstanding business in town.Bill Trask died in 1977. Bob sold the business in 1988. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing (especially ocean fishing), camping, taking care of his yard and garden, trips to Reno, the California wine country, Hawaii and Yuma. Those activities were shared with many longtime friends. He enjoyed and followed his children and grandchildren in their sports and other activities. For many years Bob carried yard markers at Regis High School football games. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. On June 25, 1997, Bobs wife of 46 years, Donna, died from cancer. On December 18, 2004, Bob married Sylva Syl Solberg. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, wife Donna, and son Bruce. He is survived by wife, Syl; children and grandchildren, Brian (Molly), Dale (Kate), Neal (Nick and Hollie), Gina (Pat) Selander (Ellen), Mark (Tyler and Tony); brother, Paul (Janet); sister, Mary (Pat) Fogarty; nephew, Jeff and niece, Meghan; and one great-grandchild. Viewing will be held at Weddle Funeral Chapel in Stayton from 2 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 5, 2009. Rosary following at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 5, 2009 also at Weddle Funeral Chapel. Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Friday, November 6, 2009 at Immaculate Conception Church in Stayton. Contributions may be made to Regis High School, Willamette Valley Hospice, or Doernbecher Hospital. Arrangements entrusted to Weddle Funeral Services Stayton, Oregon.
