Rick Lee Kassebaum, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on August 18, 2024, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born on May 30, 1948, in Portland, Oregon, Rick was the son of Irene Holinshead and Rob Kassebaum. He was one of four siblings, growing up in a family full of love and adventure.
Rick attended Washington High School in Portland, Oregon where he was known not only for his intellect but also for his athleticism, especially as a standout wrestler. Despite being born with a birth defect in his hand, Rick never allowed it to limit his pursuits. Instead, it fueled his "can-do" attitude and resilience, qualities that became a hallmark of his life. Rick’s tenacity and grit were evident to all who met him, earning him deep respect and admiration.
Throughout his life, Rick lived in various parts of Oregon, including Portland, Seaside, and most recently, Cannon Beach, where he found his true home. He was a skilled carpenter and woodworker, a profession that complemented his love for working with his hands. Rick also held positions in steel foundry work and sales, displaying his versatility and strong work ethic.
Rick’s passions were as diverse as his talents. He was an avid go-kart racer, an enthusiastic fisherman, and an accomplished water skier. He especially cherished his time spent rafting with his beloved Great Danes, who were constant companions throughout his life. One of his greatest joys, however, was playing pool. As a top player in the Portland Pool League, Rick competed for Thatcher’s Bar, earning a reputation for his skill and love of the game. His involvement with the traveling pool team brought him immense joy and lifelong friendships.
In the last decade, Rick settled into a peaceful life in Cannon Beach, where he developed close bonds with his neighbors, the local community, and his son. His love for the beach and the simple pleasures of life—like walking his Great Danes along the shore—defined his final years. His sarcastic yet loving demeanor left a lasting impression on all who knew him; whether you fell in love with his humor or were puzzled by it, Rick was unforgettable.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Irene Kassebaum, and his sisters, Gay Kassebaum and Susan Lee Kassebaum. He is survived by his son, Rob Kassebaum; his grandchildren, Jeff, Miranda, Brendan, and Brianna Kassebaum; and his sibling Timma Lee Cruz.
Rick’s life was a testament to perseverance, passion, and the power of individuality. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and community.
