Oleta Estelle Mendes

Oleta Estelle Mendes, born on June 23, 1931, in Woodsboro, Texas, to Henrietta and Charles Tucker, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2024. Oleta was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of her community.

She embarked on a beautiful journey with her beloved husband of 64 years, Mike Mendes, whom she married on June 24, 1950, in Blythe, California. He preceded her in death in 2014. Together, they nurtured a loving family, blessed with children: Mary Gear, Michael Mendes, Clifton Mendes, John Mendes, James Mendes, Richard Mendes, Glenda Utter, and Marcia Mendes.


Oleta's legacy extends through her numerous grandchildren: Gina Henson, Tanner Henson, Tyler Henson, McKensie Henson, John Thompson, Robert Thompson, Eddie Thompson, Tristan Thompson, and Tucker Thompson, Phillip C. Utter, Christopher Utter, Boone Utter, Fletcher Utter, Juniper Utter, Maverick Utter, Riley Utter, Connor Utter, Aubrey Utter, Jennifer Wooton, Liam Wooton, Julie Mendes, Nicholas Mendes, who all carry a piece of her warmth and love. She is also survived by her in-laws, Lisa Mendes, Phillip E. Utter and T’aira Stephens.


She was preceded in death by her parents, Henrietta and Charles Tucker, and her siblings: Faye Smith, Buster Tucker, Billy Whitlock, Charles Tucker, Clifton Tucker, and Sylvester Tucker. Additionally, Oleta mourned the loss of her beloved sons, Michael Mendes and Clifton Mendes, and her grandson, John Thompson.


Oleta was a woman of diverse talents and accomplishments. She earned an associate degree in english, demonstrating her commitment to learning and education. Her professional journey took her through various locations, from Blythe, California, to Salem, Oregon, Longview, Washington, Beaverton, Oregon, and finally settling in Lebanon, Oregon, where she resided from 1999 until her passing in 2024.


Her career path was marked by dedication and excellence. Oleta served as the GAF View Master Kitchen Manager from 1968 to 1992, made significant contributions to the Beaverton School District from 1993 to 1999, and continued her dedication to education by working with the Lebanon School District from 1999 to 2004.


Oleta was not only a professional but also an active member of her community. She was involved with Elkettes from 1980 to 2024 and was a charter member of the Oregon Business Women's Golf Association from 1975 until her passing. Oleta was recognized for her exceptional parenting skills, earning the title of World's Greatest Mother from 1951 until 2024, an incredible 73 consecutive years. She also proudly achieved the OBGA Champion titles in 1993 and 1997.


Her passions were vast and reflected her vibrant spirit. Oleta found joy in caring for children, creating culinary delights in the kitchen, pursuing her love for golf, engaging in community service, expressing herself through painting, enjoying playing games of chance, exploring nature through hiking, and embracing the adventures of international travel.


Oleta's infectious laughter, generous heart, and unparalleled love for nourishing others' hearts and stomachs created a lasting impact on all who knew her. She lived a full life and was the last surviving member of her immediate family, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Mike Mendes Memorial Scholarship Fund at Lebanon High School Foundation, 884 Park Street, Lebanon, OR 97355.


Oleta Estelle Mendes will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched, leaving behind a rich tapestry of love and memories that will be treasured for generations to come.
