Kyna Lynn Anderson was born on March 4, 1974, in Salem, Oregon, to Merlyn and Margie (Sunderland) Anderson. Kyna attended and graduated from Salem Academy School. She enjoyed helping people and carried that passion into working in retail and customer service, as well as spending countless hours volunteering at Salem Academy while her niece and nephews attended the school. Though she could be described as quiet and thoughtful, Kyna was also happy and bubbly, with a ready sense of humor. One of her best qualities was that she was an excellent listener and could make you feel better with just her wonderful smile. She had a compassionate, determined, and playful spirit. Kyna had many hobbies and interests. She enjoyed photography and loved to take pictures of her dog, Moxie, and cat, Bodie. She also liked photographing outdoor scenery, from the mountains and coast to the sun setting through the trees near the family home. Many of Kyna’s favorite memories were of travelling with her family. She visited Florida and Hawaii multiple times, enjoying the sunny, tropical climates and spending time on the beach. She liked to swim and was interested in marine animals, especially sharks. She loved to watch Shark Week on Discovery Channel, and would often check in with her sisters to see if they had seen a particular episode as well. Kyna listened to Christian music and rock. She loved artists like MercyMe, Petra, U2, Carman, and Bryan Adams. She liked action and science fiction movies and television shows. Kyna also shared a love of sports with her father, and was a lifelong fan of the 49ers. Throughout her life, Kyna was passionate about her hobbies, her 1971 Camaro, and former pets including Bubba, Punky, and Cougar. But she unfailingly treasured her family most. Kyna could usually be found smiling and laughing at family gatherings, and she loved spending time with the children of the family, as well as supporting them at every school performance, competition, and graduation. She enjoyed using social media to stay connected with her large extended family, which she actively worked to do by creating a family Facebook group where she frequently shared photos and memories. Most of all, Kyna had devout faith and was a member of Church on the Hill and Salem Alliance. She believed that the most important thing in life was having hope, even when it was difficult, and her faith gave her that. On March 23, 2021, Kyna passed away surrounded by the love of her family. She was preceded in death by her father, Merlyn. She is survived by her mother, Margie; sisters Kathy Vollendroff, Keri Smith, and Kim Turner; and 3 nieces and 3 nephews. Her warmth, enthusiasm, and humor will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. A private burial will be held at Twin Oaks Cemetery in Turner, Oregon, and a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Kyna’s name to the American Cancer Society.
