In Loving Memory of Kenneth "Ken" Eckhardt

Kenneth "Ken" Eckhardt, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2024, in Clackamas, Oregon, at 76. Born on October 4, 1948, in San Francisco, California, to Dale and Eva Eckhardt, Ken’s life was marked by dedication, love, and adventure.

Ken grew up with his siblings Sue and Doug, his brother Charlie, his sister Dalene, and his step-siblings Norma, Barbara, and Gary. He attended Wilcox High School and pursued his passions through the CSM Aeronautic program and a machinist program, where he cultivated the skills that would shape his long and successful career.

In 1969, Ken married his sweetheart, Hazel Chavez, in Santa Clara, California. Their 55-year marriage was a testament to love and partnership, filled with cherished memories and shared adventures. Together, they raised two children, Jennifer and Mark, and were blessed with grandchildren Alexis and Matthew, who brought immense joy to Ken’s life. He was known as “Papa”.

Ken dedicated 38 years of his career as a machinist with United Airlines, a profession he took great pride in. His skilled hands and dedication also contributed to the South Pacific Railroad for three years and Red Lake Labs for another three years before his tenure at United. Beyond his work, Ken was a devoted community member, serving as a Cub Scout leader, Little League and BobbySox softball Coach, and a proud member of the Loyal Order of the Moose since 1992. His leadership and service earned him numerous accolades, including the Governor’s Award of Achievement and the Oregon State Sports Chairman Award three times.

Ken’s life was rich with passion and adventure. He and Hazel loved traveling in their RV to all 50 states, exploring the open roads and embarking on memorable cruises across the globe, from Europe to South America, Australia, and beyond. An avid San Francisco 49ers fan who also rooted for the Giants, Ken’s enthusiasm for life extended to sports, boating, camping with family, scouts, and rock concerts.

Ken’s spirituality and faith as a Catholic guided him throughout his life, offering solace and inspiration. His generous spirit and boundless energy touched everyone who knew him, whether he was building treehouses with his son Mark, cheering on Matthew’s baseball, or helping as a handyman in his community.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Dale Eckhardt and Eva Merrill, and his brother, Charlie Merrill.

Ken is survived by his loving wife, Hazel Eckhardt; his children, Jennifer Osuna and Mark Eckhardt; grandchildren, Matthew Osuna and Alexis Eckhardt; his siblings, Dalene Durarte, Sue Eckhardt, and Doug Merrill; his step-siblings, Norma Lemke, Barbara Lindrom, and Gary Merrill; and countless friends and loved ones who will miss him dearly.
