John Walter Hall Salem, Oregon Born September 24, 1927 in Arlington, Washington, and passed away on November 3, 2009 in Salem, Oregon. John lived in Salem since 1942. He served in the US Navy during World War II, and soon after married Joy Wise on July 5, 1950 in Salem. He served as a firefighter with the Salem Fire Department for 35 years before retiring from his position as Captain in 1982. He enjoyed speedboat racing for many years and won several trophies. He also broke a speed record at Devils Lake, earning a spot in the Guinness Records. He was a scout leader for Troop 57 in the Salem/Turner area and enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He was always helping others and was a kind and generous man who loved spending time with his family. John is survived by his wife Joy, of Salem; sons Victor of Chandler, AZ and Michael of Stayton, OR; daughters Ginger Korkow of Salem and Wendy Umsted of Stayton; sister Norma Woien of Salem; brothers Gerald of Veneta, OR and Gordon of Meadow, Utah; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. A private service with military honors will be held at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. Memorial donations may be made to a local fire department or Veterans Association.
