John Stephen Nuber

May 9, 1949 — October 17, 2024

John Stephen Nuber, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, Marine, and dedicated community member, passed away on October 17, 2024, in Stayton, Oregon, at the age of 75.


John was born on May 19, 1949, in Salem, Oregon, to John Nuber and Margaret Meyer Nuber. He was the only son, growing up with his two sisters, Kay and Mary, both of whom preceded him in death. After graduating from South Salem High School, John proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He served with honor and dedication until his honorable discharge, exemplifying his lifelong commitment to service.


In 2004, John moved to Scio, Oregon, where he became a cherished part of the community. On March 27th, 1993, he married the love of his life, Deborah Sims, in Scio, and together they built a life filled with love, adventure, and joy. John worked as a pit boss in the rock-crushing industry, building and operating rock crushers with the same determination and skill he brought to all aspects of his life.


A devoted community leader, John served as a councilor for the City of Scio and was recognized with the prestigious "Spirit of Scio Award" for his many contributions. He also completed the Ford Family Leadership Class, further exemplifying his commitment to improving the lives of those around him. A man of deep faith, John was an active member of Court Street Christian Church and was involved with the Boy Scouts, helping to guide and mentor young men.


John’s love for the outdoors was evident in his many hobbies. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and mushroom picking, and spent countless hours gardening and canning. He was also known for his talent in completing puzzles and treasured traveling with his family.


John is survived by his loving wife, Deborah Nuber; his children, Eric John Nuber, Shawna Lee Nuber, Camron James Horner, and Kristopher William Horner; and his beloved grandchildren, Drew, Megan, Allyson, Kaitlyn, Riley, Madison, and Jacob; great grandchildren, Maya and Charlie. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.

A private family inurnment will take place at Miller Cemetery in Scio, Oregon.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s honor to Shriners Hospitals for Children, a cause close to his heart.

John will always be remembered for his kindness, service to his country and community, and the love he shared with his family.


His legacy will live on in the memories of those who knew and loved him.
