Joanna Lynn (Perry) Russell-Rios, beloved wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, esteemed colleague, and cherished friend, departed from this world on November 19, 2023. She left behind a legacy woven with love, music, and boundless creativity. Born on January 7, 1949, in Santa Clara, California, Joanna graced the world with her spirit and passion.
In 1990, she married Raymond Louis Rios in Eugene, Oregon, embarking on a journey of shared dreams and companionship with whom she shares a step-daughter, Miriam Rios. She also leaves behind three daughters she loved very much: Carla Josh, Melanie Crane, and Jill Schiller, from her first marriage to Larry Russell (deceased). Her legacy extends through the generations she nurtured, leaving a profound impact on 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Joanna graduated from Santa Clara High School in 1967. She moved to Sicily, Italy in 1968, joining her then-husband where he was stationed in the Navy before returning to the States and starting her family. She later attended Lane Community College in Eugene,OR and studied geology & photography. Her career paths took her from her early days as a phlebotomist for Eugene Plasma, a school bus driver, and a fraternity cook at the University of Oregon. Her professional journey culminated in a distinguished career as an Administrator with the Construction Contractors Board for the State of Oregon, retiring in 2020, after nearly 25 years.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Joanna's passions illuminated every aspect of her life. As the composer and lead jazz vocalist for the Blue Gardenia Jazztet for over two decades, along with her percussionist husband, she enthralled audiences with her musical talents her entire life. She produced a music CD named "With This Heart". Her talents of composing, drumming, guitar, piano, and singing, extended far beyond music. She also had a passion for gardening, photography, the culinary arts, and the love for writing children's books she had yet to finish.
Joanna was an Apostolic at heart, but was also a devoted member of the First Christian Church of Silverton, Oregon, and an integral part of the worship team. Joanna found solace and community within the fellowship. Joanna loved spending cherished moments with her family and friends. Joanna found relaxation in drives to the Oregon Coast, the San Juan Islands, and the Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge. Her favorite moments were the annual Mothers Day lunches with her daughters and time with extended family.
Joanna's journey was marked by both joy and sorrow. She carried the memories of her late sister Diana Perry, her step-son Miles Rios, and her parents Frank & Carol Perry.
As we bid farewell to Joanna, her presence will remain an everlasting melody in the hearts of all who knew her. Her love, unwavering kindness and voice will continue to echo through the lives she touched. We miss & love you, Joanna.
Her Celebration of Life will be on December 16, 2023 at 2pm, at the First Christian Church, 402 N. First Street, Silverton, Oregon 97381.
