Janice Lorraine Mitchell

Janice was born on September 17, 1937 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Wallace and Velva Swartwout. She had two older siblings: Don Swartwout (who preceded her in death) and Ardis Martin. Her family relocated to the Salem, Oregon area in 1942 where she met husband Kenneth L. Mitchell. The two married on September 22, 1956 and were married 62 years. Janice was a graduate of North Salem High School and worked as a bookkeeper for Mayfair Markets and Salem News Agency. She found community in the Salem chapter of Weight Watcher’s and had been a member since the 1980’s. Janice enjoyed spending time with her family and friends at Church on the Hill, where she was a member for over 60 years. During this period she volunteered her time in multiple areas. She is remembered by the church and by her friends and family as a loving servant of God. She was loyal, caring, kind, and gave often without expecting anything in return. Janice L. Mitchell passed on October 27, 2018 at Salem Hospital. She was at peace and surrounded by family. Janice is survived by her husband, Kenneth Mitchell and their three sons: Larry (wife Alice and daughter Megan Morgan), Daryl (wife Patty and daughters Rachel and Rebekah), and Glenn (preceded in death). She will also be remembered by nephew Mark Martin (wife Robin and children Annika, Everett, and Asher). In addition, Janice loved and was loved by multiple nieces and nephews. Her memorial service will be on Saturday, November 17 at 11:00am at Church on the Hill 2707 Maranatha Ct SE Turner, Oregon. The service will be followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, Janice wished for memorial contributions to be made to Church on the Hill. “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12
