Gene Lavere Spurgeon

May 11, 1935 — March 14, 2022

Gene Lavere Spurgeon passed away peacefully at home on March 14 th , 2022. He was born to Asa Edward Spurgeon and Erma Tyler on May 11 th , 1935, in Eugene, Oregon. Gene had three brothers: Vernon, Earnest, and John.

Gene married the love of his life, Sarah Jane Jones in Omaha, Nebraska on August 15 th , 1957. Gene and Sarah had six children: Vicki Rhoades, Edward, Robin Couture, James, Wenda Shinall Norene, and Jonathan. They had 13 grandchildren: Charlene, Rene, Lee, Michelle, Melissa, Daniel, Nicholas, Theadore, Crystal, Marsha, Jessica, Tara, Cassie, and several great grandchildren.

Gene served in the United States Air Force and went on to work for Pacific Northwest Bell Phone Company until he retired. Gene enjoyed fly fishing, camping, hunting, woodworking, his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and running the family farm. Gene was a generous, kind, and loving man who taught us all so much about unconditional love, hard work, and respect. He was truly the glue that held all of us together and will forever be in our hearts and memories.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, daughter-in-law: Dorothy Spurgeon, son-in-law: Richard Norene, and his partner and soulmate of 63 years, Sarah.

A potluck celebration of life will be held at the family farm on May 11 th at 2:00 pm, all family and friends are invited to attend. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital.
