Doris Ellen Hand October 1, 1929 – August 5, 2010 Doris Ellen Hand passed away peacefully August 5th with her family at her side after suffering several years with Alzheimers. The oldest of 13 children, Doris was born October 1, 1929, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, to Ernie and Ellen (Bowcutt)Hicks. She spent her younger years living in Utah, California, Washington and the Silverton Hills in Oregon where her father farmed, raising chickens and strawberries. She was married to William Wood Carlson in 1945 and had two children, Cheryl Anne and Sandra Suzanne (Sue). They later divorced and she married the love of her life, Arthur Harold Hand, Jr. in Aiken, South Carolina, 1954. Two children were born to Doris and Art: Dawn Denise and Timothy Arthur. Art was in the Army and they spent many years traveling throughout the United States until his retirement in 1968, settling in Salem, Oregon. In her early years, Doris worked in restaurants in Utah and Washington and was an exceptional cook and baker. She enjoyed arts and crafts, crocheting, sewing, and gardening. She particularly enjoyed making quilts for family and friends. While in Fairbanks, Alaska, Doris and Art were recognized by the Ft. Wainwright Post Commander for their efforts in organizing and operating a Teen Club for the teenage youth on base. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Dawn, husband, Art, and brothers, Donald, Daniel, Delaine and Odell Hicks. She is survived by three children and their spouses: Cheryl (Craig) Rice, Sue (Greg) Parkinson and Tim (Trish) Hand; six grandchildren: Darren (Tess) Rice and Crissy (Damon) Teasdale of Turner, Oregon; Leslie Reed, Travis Parkinson, Sarah Mattos, and Logan Hand, Salem, Oregon; and eight great grandchildren; Hayden, Taylor and Colton Rice, Jenna Wedel and Carson Teasdale of Turner, Oregon, Ashlyn Ricketts, Cody Ricketts and Susie Reed of Salem; brothers, Dewaine Hicks and Ray (Sharon) Hicks of Vale, Oregon; sisters: Dorothy (Ken) Bomberger of LaGrande, Oregon, Diana Tompkins and Rita (Ted) Laverack of Salem, Karen Gardner and Corene (Rocky) Blythe of Aumsville and Nadina (Tom) Trotter of Vale, Oregon; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be Monday, August 9th from 9 1:00 PM and Funeral Service will be at 2:00 pm both at Weddle Funeral Chapel, Stayton, Oregon.
