Donald Robert Palmer, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on February 8, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on September 10, 1945, in Salem, Oregon, to Dorothy Mae (Travis) Palmer and Clare Ruthevan Palmer, Donald spent his entire life in Salem, building a legacy of hard work, adventure, and storytelling.

A graduate of North Salem High School in 1963, Donald pursued some college before dedicating himself to a career as a short-haul truck driver. He also proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from December 22, 1966, to July 13, 1967, working as a refueler—an experience he often recalled with fondness, accompanied by his well-known knack for navigation and love of maps.

On June 6, 1994, Donald married the love of his life, Carol (Cole), in Salem. Together, they shared a life filled with travel, adventure, and cherished family moments. Donald was a devoted father to Tad Palmer and Scott Smith and a proud grandfather to Seth Palmer, Max Palmer, Logan (Palmer) Huggins, Lance Smith, Kylie Smith, and Adam Smith (Sarah), Ryan Runnels, Robert Runnels and several great grandchildren.

A man of many passions, Donald was an avid outdoorsman who found joy in hiking and fishing, particularly in the Cascades, Jackson Hole, the Grand Tetons, and along the Oregon Coast. He was a devoted fan of the OSU Beavers and had a lifelong love of aircraft, frequently attending airshows and even taking B-17 flights. His appreciation for American history, travel, and storytelling made him a captivating conversationalist, always ready to share detailed recollections of his experiences.

Donald was a proud member of several organizations, including the B-17 Alliance, NRA, American Legion, Bend Band of Brothers, and the Teamsters. He also enjoyed attending gun shows and took great pride in his patriotism and historical knowledge. One of his most treasured journeys was a trip to Spain to visit family.

He is preceded in death by his parents and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Donald’s honor to the B-17 Alliance or the Salvation Army.

Donald’s legacy of warmth, wisdom, and adventure will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
