Craig Nelson Rice, 78, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, in Salem, Oregon, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on July 31, 1946 in Decatur, Illinois, to Chester and Maxine (Weiss) Rice.

Craig spent much of his early life in Fairbanks, Alaska, where he attended Lathrop High School and briefly the University of Alaska. He earned an Associate of Science degree in Electronic Engineering from Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon 1998

On January 21, 1968, Craig married the love of his life, Cheryl Hand, in Ft. Lewis, Washington. Together, they built a life rooted in love, family, and adventure. They were blessed with two children, Darren and Karla “Crissy”.

Craig was a dedicated and hardworking man. He began his career at Boise Cascade where he dedicated himself for 30yrs before joining Cherriots Public Transportation as a Cherry Lift Driver. Throughout his career, he made lasting contributions and friendships that he cherished deeply.

Beyond work, Craig was a man of faith and a member of Bible Baptist Church. He found great joy in the outdoors, embracing fishing, hunting, and camping. A true craftsman, he loved working in his shop and took pride in fixing anything with an engine. His hands were rarely still, always tinkering with something, always finding solutions.

Craig’s life was one of dedication, kindness, and quiet strength. His ability to find joy in the simple things—family, friends and the outdoors—was a gift to all who knew him. While he will be deeply missed, his legacy of love, perseverance, and craftsmanship will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

Craig’s greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his son, Darren Rice; grandchildren, Hayden Rice, Taylor Rice, Colton Rice, Jenna Barnhart (Wedel), and Carson Teasdale and 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cheryl; his daughter, Karla “Crissy” Teasdale; his siblings, Virga Hoopert, Lynnette Ashcraft, Deborah Duff, and Tony Rice; and his parents, Chester and Maxine Rice.

A celebration of life is planned for later this summer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an organization that supports cancer patients and their families.
