Clifford was the son of the late Myrtle Pliny Strickland and Clifford Edward Thornton. He was a beloved brother to James Thornton, John Thornton, and JoAnn Herbeck. Clifford was a devoted father to his children, Thomas Thornton and Elizabeth Thornton. He was also a cherished grandfather to Landen King, Adeline Thornton, and Gabriel Thornton. His family was his pride and joy, and he loved them dearly.


Clifford spent 30 years of his life in Mill City, where he formed deep connections with the town and its people. He was a familiar and friendly face in the community, always ready to lend a hand or share a kind word. His love for his community was evident in his dedication to his work as the Lead Custodian for the Santiam School District. He took great pride in his work, always striving to create a safe and clean environment for the children and staff. His dedication to his job was a testament to his selfless nature.


Before settling in Mill City, Clifford served on the USS Constellation during the Vietnam War as a machinist mate in the US Navy. His service to his country was a source of great pride for him, and he carried the lessons he learned during his time in the Navy throughout his life.


In his spare time, Clifford was an avid woodworker and fly fisherman. He found great joy in creating beautiful pieces of furniture and art with his hands.
