December 19, 1933 August 8, 2013 Scio, Oregon Carol Gwinn Haugerud, 79, passed away at her home in Scio, OR, of leukemia after living with cancer for many years. She was born and raised in Omak, WA where her father, Mac, developed a variety of local businesses including the local gas station and her mother Ursul, cared for the home. She attended school and graduated from Omak High School in 1951. She remained lifelong friends with many of her childhood classmates. She continued her education at Whitman College in Walla Walla WA where she received her BA in Social Sciences in 1955. While at Whitman she met her future husband Carl Haugerud. Immediately following graduation, she taught third grade at Gregory Heights Grade School in Burien, WA. In 1956 she married Carl Haugerud, and they were married for 57 years. They moved to Salem shortly after their marriage where Carl worked for the State of Oregon and Carol focused on raising their family. In 1971, they moved to a farm near Scio, OR. Carol embraced the additional activities that living on a farm entailed including driving tractor, managing rouging crews, and overseeing business matters. Carl deeply appreciated her business skills as they tested various crops including brassica seeds, alfalfa, corn, oats, and recently flax. He also appreciated her tenacious spirit and problem solving ability: regularly he would call out in passing, Come get me in the field, and she had to figure out which field he was talking about. Throughout her life Carol emphasized the value of education and personal growth. Some of her interests included reading, gardening, rug hooking, spinning, and her familys genealogy. She was involved with her community through many organizations including Women for Agriculture, Scio and Linn-Benton County Planning Commissions, and the Friends of the Scio Public Library. She also participated in the Save the Covered Bridges campaign. She enjoyed the company of many friends and was a 60 year Kappa Kappa Gamma Alum and delighted in her weekly bridge foursome. She was an active investment club member for over 30 years. Carol was a dedicated mother, wife, and business partner on the farm. Her sensibility, knowledge and joy in being with a broad diversity of people to share common interests and to encourage new friendships, will be missed by all. Carol is survived by her husband Carl, sons Nicholas Haugerud of Colfax, WA, Erik Haugerud of Corvallis, OR and daughter Heidi Tyler, of Huntsville, AL.
