Betty Jean Mask

Betty Jean Mask August 30, 1928 February 13, 2018 Scio, Oregon Betty Jean Arata Mask was born to Mildred Grace Gipson and William Paul Arata on August 30, 1928 in Memphis, Tennessee. She is preceded in death by her husband James (Jimmy) Mask of 60 years who together created a large, loving family. Their children James and Sandi Mask of Salem, Bonnie and Butch Parazoo of Scio, Tom and Judy Mask of Scio, Geri and BJ Richmond of Scio, and Dennis and Tina Mask of Scio gave them their greatest treasures in this life, their 16 grandchildren (James Mask JR, Bobbi Jo Cronin, Kevin Parazoo, Douglas Parazoo, Matthew Parazoo, Ann Rimer, Jamie McDaniel, Thomas Adam Mask, Robert Porter, Mert Porter, Delana Carter, Joseph Chase, Julie Kingery, Shawn Mask, Misty Heil and Carrie Mask) and plethora of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. After traveling for work in Tennessee and Oregon the couple finally settled in Scio in 1967. Affectionately known as Grandma Mask by many in the town, she worked in the school kitchen for many years. Betty lived for her family. As a dedicated matriarch to her large family, she supported her grandchildren in all of their endeavors. She was often found in the stands of any sporting event at Scio High School cheering for her grandkids and extended family she had adopted over the years. She was always the supportive grandma of the town, offering a warm embrace and listening ear. She was also an active member of the TOPS club in Scio where she met many friends over the years. She attended Scio Baptist Church regularly as well as activities at the local senior center. After the death of her husband Jimmy, she found companionship with Bob Newell of Scio. They found happiness together in the last nine years of her life, traveling the country and enjoying the thing she loved most, family. The Newell family welcomed her with open arms becoming like a second family to her. Bob gave her a renewed happiness and sense of adventure for which her family is very grateful. She is survived by her children and significant other Bob Newell of Scio. She is preceded in death by her husband Jimmy as well as her seven siblings: William Arata, Mary Louise Arata, Joann Rappel, John Joseph (Pete) Rappel, Deloris (Pat) Rappel, Beverly (Snookie) Rappel and Ronnie Rappel. There will be a viewing at Weddle Funeral Home in Stayton, Oregon Wednesday February 21 from 1-4. Betty’s memorial service will be held at Scio Baptist Church on February 22 at 1 PM. If unavailable to attend the service, there will be a live stream available through the church’s website at sciobaptistchurch.org. A private internment at Miller Cemetery in Scio will be held for family.
