Bertha Matilda (Duey) Carpenter June 21, 1918 August 22, 2008 Salem, Oregon Bertha went home to be with Jesus on August 22, 2008 at the age of 90. She was born in Chester, Neb. to Charles and Mabel Duey. She was the sixth child of eight children. She enjoyed reading her Bible and church missionary group. Her hobbies were embroidery, crocheting, making quites, and needle work. Bertha and her husband did custodial work at the Chemawa Indian School for several years. They both retired from Fairview Training Center. They moved to Oregon in 1953 and settled in the Salem area. In later years, they moved to Stayton. Her last three years, she lived at Lancaster Village Retirement and Assisted Living Home in Salem. She was preceded in death by husband, Willard Sid and son, Roger; her parents; brother, John; and four sisters, Edna, Gladys, Hazel, and Elsie. Bertha is survived by her three daughters, Mildred (Don) Brinlee of Turner, Bernice (Don) Franzen of Salem, and Ramona (Marvin) LaRont of Scio; two sons, Charles (Donna) Carpenter of Scio and Kenneth (Nancy) Carpenter of Salem; brother, Raymond (Loretta) Duey of Belville, Kan.; sister, Ruby Baloun of Heburn, Neb.; two sister-in-laws, Bettie Babineau of Gilbert, Ariz. and Evelyn Smith of Lebanon, Tenn. She has numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Bertha was a great homemaker and a truly loving mother. She loved her family. She will be greatly missed by all. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Aumsville. Any donations may be made to the Willamette Valley Hospice or Bethel Baptist Church. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 28 at Bethel Baptist Church, Aumsville.
