Arthur James Metz

Salem- Arthur James Metz, 81, went to be with his Saviour on Sunday, May 14, 2023.


Arthur was born October 3, 1941, in Forrest, Illinois to Ludwig and Persida (Honegger) Metz. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Martin on May 5, 1963, in Marengo. Committing their lives to Jesus Christ, they were baptized together in 1968 while attending the Apostolic Christian Church in Elgin.


He faithfully served as a minister and elder of the Silverton and Portland churches. He loved his Lord and is remembered for his meek and nurturing example.


After attending DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago he was employed by Argonne National Laboratory. The family relocated to Oregon in 1968 where Art was employed at Tektronix as an electronic engineer.


Art enjoyed God’s creation, from viewing the mountain peaks to watching the birds in his backyard. His pastimes included spending time on his hobby farm raising cattle and sheep, gardening, cutting wood and spending fireside time with his family.


Art is survived by his dear wife Betty, of 60 years. Also surviving are his five children: Lisa (Mike) Leman of Justin, Texas; Amy (Christopher) Menold of Sabetha, Kansas; Joel (Laura) Metz of Keizer; Eldon (Alice) Metz of Salem; and Mary (Chris) Kuenzi of Salem; 19 grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Metz of Fairbury, Illinois; and one brother, Benjamin (Miriam) Metz of Francesville, Indiana.


Art was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters Elizabeth Johnson and Esther Gerber; and 4 brothers: Christian, Emil, William and David.


Memorials may be directed to the Apostolic Christian LifePoints Organization or Fairview Haven in Fairbury, IL.


The funeral will be held at 1 pm, Sunday, May 21, 2023, at the Apostolic Christian Church of Silverton with church ministers officiating. A graveside service will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery.


Visitation will be Saturday, May 20, 2023, from 6-8 pm at the Apostolic Christian Church Fellowship Hall located at 4700 Howell Prairie Road NE, Silverton. Prior to the funeral, there will be a viewing in the Church Sunday School Room from 12:15-12:45 pm.
