Ann M. Smith October 21, 1930 - March 14, 2020 (age 89) Ann M. Smith was born Annabelle Mae Jones on October 21, 1930 to Fred and Louise Jones in Julesburg, CO. She attended a local grade school riding her Shetland pony sometimes in a winter blizzard to attend. She boarded in town to attend Sedgwick County High School graduating in 1947. Ann married Donald L. Smith from Chapel, NE on April 11, 1948. After living short periods in CO and NE they moved with their four children in 1957 to Harrisburg, OR where Donald farmed for Bowers Inc. Ann loved to cook and bake, garden, preserve food, sew (making both work and dress western shirts and sport coats for Don and grandsons as well as twirly dresses for granddaughters), knit (her cotton wash cloths were much sought after items), watch football, and her favorite leisure activity was reading. She worked many years as a waitress (Round Table at the Harrisburg interchange and The Junction House in Junction City), and in retail sales (Latham Luggage at the then new Valley River Center in Eugene and Moody Hardware in Harrisburg). In 1991, after 44 years of marriage, she lost the love of her life when Donald died suddenly from heart failure. She then trained and worked at Harrisburg City Hall as a clerk doing permits and water billings. Prior to his death, she and Donald moved off the farm on Bowers Road into town on sixth street. They both volunteered in many city activities and Ann continued her community volunteerism for many years after losing Don. She was instrumental in starting the Harrisburg Christmas Light Parade, served on the city council, worked part time at Harrisburg City Library, and volunteered with the Library Guild among many other interests. Ann moved to assisted living at Quail Run in the Mennonite Village in Albany, OR from 2012-17, and then to Avamere Rehabilitation and Nursing in Junction City, OR. Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her parents and her brothers, Johnny, Lyle, Frank, and Harold Jones, her sisters Fern and Faythe Jones Maahs, her grandson Kyle Jefferies, and her sons, Douglys and Darryl Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Toni (Stephen) Jefferies, Hat Island, WA; son, David L (Kristy) Smith, Harrisburg, OR; daughters-in-law, Connie Corey Smith and Carolyn Sinclair Smith; grandchildren, Shelly (Bobby) Case, Meredith (Brian) Frank, Samantha (Michael) Shew, and Devin (Krista) Jefferies; great-grands, Dallas (Chloe) and Sydnee Case, Grayson and Harlow Jefferies, Lenore and Louis Frank; great-great grand, Lincoln Case, and many brother and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ann had been in the last stages of dementia since December 2019, with Hospice providing additional care beyond the nursing home staff. A memorial will be held at a later date. She will be greatly missed by her many family members, and by her friends in the community.
