Betty Mask – Scio, OR

Betty Jean Mask

August 30, 1928 – February 13, 2018

Betty Jean Arata Mask was born to Mildred Grace Gipson and William Paul Arata on August 30, 1928 in Memphis, Tennessee. She is preceded in death by her husband James (Jimmy) Mask of 60 years who together created a large, loving family. Their children James and Sandi Mask of Salem, Bonnie and Butch Parazoo of Scio, Tom and Judy Mask of Scio, Geri and BJ Richmond of Scio, and Dennis and Tina Mask of Scio gave them their greatest treasures in this life, their 16 grandchildren (James Mask JR, Bobbi Jo Cronin, Kevin Parazoo, Douglas Parazoo, Matthew Parazoo, Ann Rimer, Jamie McDaniel, Thomas Adam Mask, Robert Porter, Mert Porter, Delana Carter, Joseph Chase, Julie Kingery, Shawn Mask, Misty Heil and Carrie Mask) and plethora of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

After traveling for work in Tennessee and Oregon the couple finally settled in Scio in 1967. Affectionately known as Grandma Mask by many in the town, she worked in the school kitchen for many years. Betty lived for her family. As a dedicated matriarch to her large family, she supported her grandchildren in all of their endeavors. She was often found in the stands of any sporting event at Scio High School cheering for her grandkids and extended family she had adopted over the years. She was always the supportive grandma of the town, offering a warm embrace and listening ear.

She was also an active member of the TOPS club in Scio where she met many friends over the years. She attended Scio Baptist Church regularly as well as activities at the local senior center.

After the death of her husband Jimmy, she found companionship with Bob Newell of Scio. They found happiness together in the last nine years of her life, traveling the country and enjoying the thing she loved most, family. The Newell family welcomed her with open arms becoming like a second family to her. Bob gave her a renewed happiness and sense of adventure for which her family is very grateful.

She is survived by her children and significant other Bob Newell of Scio. She is preceded in death by her husband Jimmy as well as her seven siblings: William Arata, Mary Louise Arata, Joann Rappel, John Joseph (Pete) Rappel, Deloris (Pat) Rappel, Beverly (Snookie) Rappel and Ronnie Rappel.

There will be a viewing at Weddle Funeral Home in Stayton, Oregon Wednesday February 21 from 1-4. Betty’s memorial service will be held at Scio Baptist Church on February 22 at 1 PM. If unavailable to attend the service, there will be a live stream available through the church’s website at A private internment at Miller Cemetery in Scio will be held for family.

Melvin Derrick-Sublimity

Melvin C. Derrick

September 10, 1922-February 13, 2018

A celebration of life will be held for Melvin C. Derrick on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 11am at Weddle Funeral Service. Melvin passed away on February 13, 2018 at age 95. He was born on September 9, 1922 in Nampa, Idaho to Wallace and Viola Derrick. After high school, Melvin honorably served his country in the Army Airforce during World War II. He completed 35 missions as a B-24 Artilleryman and earned a Valor award. After being honorably discharged, Melvin married Pearl Simmons in 1947 and together they started a family.

Melvin loved hunting deer and elk, fishing and most of all spending time with his family. He enjoyed game shows like Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune, reading Louis L’amour novels and watching westerns, especially anything with John Wayne.

Melvin will always be remembered as being happy and a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his two sons Gary L. Derrick and George C. Derrick.

Melvin is survived by his wife Pearl, daughters Peggy A. Kimbro and Sharon L. Cota in addition to his 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.


Raymond Pietrok

Raymond Andrew Pietrok

November 30, 1935 –  January 21, 2018

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and brother Harry. He is survived by his wife Elsie, children Jodena (Darin) Knutson and Matthew (Alicia) Pietrok; siblings Rose Rush, Harold (Alyce) Pietrok, Molly (Leland) Hartmann, and Wilma (Elmer) Goodwin; grandchildren Luke, Madelynn, Violet, Cora, Alan, Mandy, Bryanna, Sean, Andrew, Kaelyn, Abbie, and 2 Great-Grandchildren.

SERVICES will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Stayton, Oregon.

 Father Luan will be officiating the ROSARY at 10:00 a.m. and the MEMORIAL MASS at 10:30 a.m.

A reception will follow the service, and after the reception the RITE OF COMMITTAL is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery

Helen M. Jones – Idanha, OR

Helen Marie Jones passed away on February 4, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Helen was born December 26, 1938 in Green Brier County, West Virginia to Elsie and Oakey Jones. Helen was the 3rd of 10 children. The family moved from West Virginia to Oregon in 1953. Helen worked the majority of her life at multiple jobs eventually working for Marion County Building Maintenance until she retired. After a few years she got bored with retirement and went to work at Norpac where she enjoyed working with and talking to all the friends she made there. After a number of years working there, she again retired. Helen had many interests including reading, spending time with friends and family and she loved her visits to the casinos and her scratch-offs. Helen leaves behind her husband of 40 years, Charles and her children Donald (Carol), Wayne and Charlene as well as 8 grandkids, 7 great grandkids and 1 great, great grandson. She is survived by sisters, Cara of Salem and Velma of Salem, brothers Donny of Indiana, Vernon of Washington and Harold of California and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother Elsie, Father Oakey, daughter Margaret and grandson Jason as well as sisters (Arbella, Judy) and brothers (Melvin, Kenna). Her family invites all who knew her to a Celebration of Life on February 17, 2018 at 1:00pm at ZCBJ Hall, 38704 N. Main St., Scio. Services are being provided by Weddle Funeral in Stayton, Oregon.

Karen L. Drushella – Lebanon, OR

Karen Lee Drushella (Engel), 73, of Lebanon, Oregon, died January 31, 2018, at Evergreen Hospice in Albany. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Timothy W. Engel (Gia) of Albany, Tracy L. Stearns-Church (John) of University Place, WA, and Marcy R. Engel-Christensen (Scott) of Albany.  There are 6 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters: Melissa Engel, Jessica Engel, Jason Stearns, Kristin Stearns, Zackary Engel-Christensen, Benjamin Engel-Christensen, Emma Jensen and Evelyn Booth.

Karen was born in California and moved to Oregon in 1965 to be near her mother. She met Garth Engel and they married in 1968.  He died in 1993.  She married Douglas Drushella in 1995. He died in 2016. She enjoyed bingo and cards and games with her family and friends.  She had a great sense of humor.

There are no services per her request, and a private ceremony will be held for her final resting place.

Jannette Sullivan – Keizer, OR

Jannette ‘Jan’ Lucille (Noble) Sullivan

August 24, 1939 – January 23, 2018

Jannette(Jan) Sullivan, in the comfort of her family, and after a short story (read by her great-granddaughter Isabell) passed away on the evening of January 23, 2018. Jan was born on August 24, 1939, to Verna and Bill Noble, in Ainsworth, Nebraska.

As a child Jan enjoyed spending time with her twin sister and best friend Janice Yerby. Together they allowed the rest of the world to enjoy their witty sense of humor of trading places and their enviable bond of closeness.

In junior high and high school Jan enjoyed playing the drums for the school band. On September 22, 1956, in Boise, Idaho, Jannette married her high school sweetheart, Dennis Sullivan. Together, they loved and raised seven children and one very special niece: Nancy Davies (Rick), Peggy Whelden, Mary Harrold (Dan), Pat Sullivan (Dory), Karon Stanek (Stan), Sharon Price (David) Jeff Sullivan and Pam Milner (Mike). While raising her children she was active in various school duties and church activities. Jan also worked at Montgomery Wards as a sales associate for over 20 years. Later in life, Jan loved fishing, (especially the Siletz Bay area), traveling, going for long drives, spending time with family, talking with her sister Janice, assisting others, and listening to/participating in live music. Jan especially enjoyed holiday gatherings with friends and family.

Jan is the proud grandmother of 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild Nalah. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings Darrell Lehman, Don Noble, and Paul Lehman.

Mom’s love and compassion for others will be greatly missed by those who knew her.

For those who loved me, my date of 34 years, Mary Ellen; my children, Stasia, Gabe, Jonathan and Calvin; my siblings Carolyn, Sharon, David & Dan and a dozen grandchildren. Born in California in 1951, moved to Washington and settled in Oregon 25 years ago.  Loved new adventures and the outdoors.  Aviation and landscaping hobbyist.  Avid humorist and lecturer.  The family wishes to thank the angels at Willamette Valley Hospice.

Shannon was born on November 5th, 1964 in Salem Oregon to Arley and Delores Orr.
He resided in Stayton Oregon where he raised 4 children. Shannon was known for his genuine personality and love for his children and grandchildren. He will forever be loved and missed by all who knew him.
Shannon left this earth on December 8th, 2017. He is survived by his Father: Arley Orr. Brother: David Orr. Wife: Debbie Orr. Children: Brandi Etzel, Brandon Orr, Brittney Keys, Courtney Barringer, Bryce Orr and several adoring Grandchildren: Macy, Justin, Lilianna, Collin, Lindsay, Haven, Emma and Easton.
A celebration of life will be held on January 6, 2018 at 2PM at his youngest daughter Brittney’s home: 314 SW Kingwood Ave Mill City, Oregon.

Donna K. Unger-Hayton – Keizer, OR

Donna K. Unger-Hayton, 67, passed away on December 5, 2017. Donna was born on December 22, 1949 in Centralia, Illinois to John Bryson Sr. and Dorothy Louise Bryson, Née Smith. She was one of six children. Donna was born in Illinois but raised in Oregon. She graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1968, home of the Eagles. While living in Harrisburg, Donna’s foster parents (Ray and Sue Wasson) owned and operated a pizza parlor where she worked as a part-time manager. In April of 2002, Donna married the love of her life, Scottie Hayton. Donna had a true love for all animals throughout her life. She always had an animal by her side. Donna will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Donna is survived by her Brothers; John S. Bryson Jr. of Washington, twin brother Don Bryson of Salem, Oregon, and Bill J. Bryson of California, Sisters; Marie (Etta) Brown and Bonnie Sheridan, both of Keizer, and Barbara Bryson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Scottie Hayton.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at 12pm at Weddle Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will follow at City View Cemetery in Salem. Arrangements entrusted to Weddle Funeral Services.

Marion Erma Dorothy – Mill City

Marion Erma Schwartz Dorothy, 97, Sublimity, died Tue. Nov. 7, 2017 at Marian Estates.

A Celebration Of Life Service will be held Sat. Dec. 2, 2017 @ 2 pm at the Mill City Presbyterian Church, 236 SW Broadway St. in Mill City, with Pastor Carol Swanson officiating.

Private Cremation Rites have been held and Inurnment will be held at the Fairview Cemetery at a later date.

Marion Erma Schwartz Dorothy was born Feb. 8, 1920 in Wolsey, SD. to Henry Louis and Clara Klinger Schwartz. She was raised and educated in South Dakota with her older sister, Ella. She then attended the General Beadle College at Madison, SD and began teaching at Wolsey. She moved to Vernonia, OR in 1945 with one of her college friends and taught school there for 4 years. In 1949 she moved to Mill City, OR and continued her teaching career there.

Marion was united in marriage to Raymond Gale Dorothy on June 23, 1951 in Vancouver, Wa. In 1954 they moved to The Dalles, Or. where their daughter, Susan was born and two years later they moved to Pierre, SD where she taught school. In 1965 they made their home in Mill City where she worked in Gates and Mill City as a teacher until she retired in 1983.

Among her personal interests she enjoyed sewing, and collecting coins and antiques. Marion loved spending time with her granddaughter and her great grandchildren. Marion was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Mill City. She was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Historical Assoc.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2015 and her sister, Ella.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Ryan of Salem, Or., her granddaughter and husband, Heather and Randy Thomas, great-grandchildren; Jordan, Gabriel, and Keira Lanham, and Kendall Thomas.

The family suggests remembrances may be contributions made to the charity of ones choice in Marion’s memory.
