Ruby was 97 years young when she left this world on Nov 28, and was greeted at heaven’s gate by the Lord and husband. She was born in Liberal Kansas to Glenn and Hattie Pennington and she was 4th of 5 siblings. The family moved to Oregon when she was a teenager settling in the Victor Point area, where she graduated from Silverton High School. In 1941 she met Kenneth Boswell and they were married in September prior to him leaving for war. She joined him in Panama where they lived until the end of the war. They returned to Oregon and lived in logging camps in Central Oregon, as Kenneth as a logger. They settled in Sisters, and then moved to Aumsville. In 1956 Dorothy was born, 1958 Patricia came along. In 1959 they all moved to Sublimity and in 1961 Roger was born. Ruby was a hard worker her entire life. She had seen the struggles growing up and worked hard to make life better for her family. She was a great homemaker, cook, baker, canning, flower gardens which she loved, large vegetable gardens, raising all their own meat and processing it. She was a gifted seamstress making clothes for the family and later in life made may quilts. She loved to hunt, fish, camp, and spending time with family and friends. She was active in the community being the President of the PTA at Sublimity Grade School for many years and the Den Leader to her daughters Girl Scouts Troop. Ruby lived a full and wonderful life and lived and remained in her home until the last 6 weeks of her life when she had to leave. She is preceded in death by her parents Glenn and Hattie Pennington, husband Kenneth of 53 years, 1 sister, 2 brothers, 1 Granddaughter. She is survived by brother; Gene Pennington of Lebanon, Children; Dorothy (Jary) Johnson Salem, Patricia (Dan) Bartosz of Turner, Roger (Cecilia) Boswell of Salem, 9 Grandchildren, and 13 Great Grandchildren. The family would personally like to thank Serenity Hospice and Four Seasons Memory Care for all the wonderful love and care that was provided to Mom during her last few weeks.

Their devotion was exceptional. In lieu of flowers please donate to Serenity Hospice or the Salem Friends of Felines.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 11am at Weddle Funeral Chapel.

Mardell (Johnston) Barnett, aged 93, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2017 in Salem surrounded by family. Mom was born on June 11, 1924 in Portland to Charles and Leah Johnston. She grew up in St. Helens, spending her summers in the woods around Vernonia. In 1943 she attended a USO dance in Seaside where she met her future husband, Edward Barnett. They hit it off and were married on February 11, 1944 in San Francisco before dad shipped out to the war in the Pacific Theater. After Dad’s return in 1945, they moved to Houston where Don and Sandie were born. In 1948 they moved back to St. Helens where they welcomed Artie, Judy, and Vickie. Moving again in 1955 to Redmond, they were blessed with three more children; Cheryl, Kevin, and Greg. Living in Redmond for the next 20 years, Mom spent her time between family, her garden, and enjoying the many outdoor opportunities. In 1975 the family moved to Stayton where she spent many happy years with her family and her flower garden. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and son, Artie. She is survived by her children; Don and wife Cindy, Sandie, Judy, Vickie and husband John, Cheryl and husband Dominic, Kevin, Greg. Twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at Lone Oak Cemetery at 2:00PM.

Kathleen (O’Mara) Peerenboom, 86, died peacefully at home on October 6, 2017. Kathleen grew up in Tigard, Oregon, and moved to Salem upon graduating from Tigard High School, to work for the State of Oregon. Soon thereafter she met Raymond Peerenboom and the two were married September 1, 1951. She eventually left working for the state to work as a recording secretary for such groups as Oregon State Employees Association and Oregon Employees Federal Credit Union so that she could work from home and spend more time with her family.

Kathy was a lover of the arts, particularly music, and a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a frequent volunteer at St. Joseph School and Sacred Heart Academy while her children attended the schools and was active in her sorority as well as alumni functions for both her and her husband. She loved to bake and frequently did so for anyone with whom she came in contact. Later in life Kathy sang in her church choir as well as Festival Chorale of Oregon, having the opportunity to tour such places as Carnegie Hall and Western Europe with FCO.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond. Among her survivors are her sister Teresa; her children Sharon, Karen, Mike and Jim; and her grandsons Ryan, Terry, Trent and Cameron. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salem, October 14 at 10:30 am. Interment to take place at St. Barbara Cemetery, Salem. Donations can be made to Salem Friends of Felines in her honor.

Gerrit Hendrik van Loon – Salem Or.

Gerrit van Loon, 89, peacefully passed away on October 5, 2017 and is now with the Lord. He was born in the Holland on April 5, 1928.

Gerrit graduated from Agriculture School and worked on the family farm in Holland until 1957. He then immigrated to Alberta, Canada to earn money so he could buy his own farm. One year later, his bride to be, Ann, immigrated so they could get married. They moved to Modesto, California in 1963 where he milked for several years before becoming a partner in a Cash & Carry store in Redding, California. In 1970, they moved to Jefferson, Oregon where they bought their own dairy farm. He was a hard working man and always wanted the best for his wife and children. In 1996 he retired and moved to Salem, Oregon, and continued to be involved with the dairy by running errands. His son Kryn, and grandsons, Ben and Jeremy, now manage the dairy. It meant a lot to Gerrit to keep the farm in the family.

Gerrit was blessed with 59 years of marriage to Ann and good health allowed him to spend time with family in Holland and enjoy many trips and activities with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gerrit was a member of Immanuel’s Reformed Church. He loved the title of ‘Opa’ which many people called him.

He is survived by his wife Ann; his son Kryn (Irene) van Loon of Jefferson, OR; his daughter Alice (Rick) Steffen of Silverton, OR; his daughter Lisa (Don) Switzer of Salem, OR; his brother Han (Aat) van Loon and sister Krientje van Loon of the Netherlands; 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Lydi van Loon of the Netherlands.

A service will be held October 14, 2017 at 11:00, at Immanuel’s Reformed Church, 4653 Sunnyview Road NE, Salem, Oregon 97305. Memorial donations may be made to the Salem Union Gospel Mission at

Brenda Sue (Erwin) Carmen was born on March 2, 1949 in Bakersfield, CA.   The daughter of Mitchell and Bessie Erwin.  She passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on Saturday, September 23rd.  She was 68 years of age.  Brenda traveled in her younger years but made Salem her home for the last 50 years.  She had worked as a C.N.A. and for medical transport.  Her goal was to provide loving care for the elderly.  She enjoyed puzzles, history, politics and being a grandmother, Zelda, casinos, crocheting and watching FOX news.  Brenda was a proud grandmother and loved her grandchildren more than anything in the world.  She was honest and had strong opinions about most things in life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved sisters, Dottie, Joanne and Stella.  She is survived by her children, Joe Erwin, John Hayward, Jeffery Hayward, Jessie Vasquez and Nonnie Gore; brothers and sisters, Carter, David, Mitch, Marlene, Darlene, John, Frank and Pearl; grandchildren, Cayden Vasquez, Hadlee Vasquez, Jessalyn Vasquez, Joe Austin Ramirez, Amelia Angst, Zayleigh Emerson.  Visitation will be held Friday, Sept. 29th at 1:00 pm at Weddle Funeral Chapel.  Funeral Service will follow at 2:00 pm also at Weddle Funeral Chapel. Clydia “Punkin” Emmerson – Salem, OR

Punkin passed away Monday night surrounded by her loving family. Clydia Storey was born June 5, 1941, in Salem, OR to Clyde and Goldie Storey of Idahna, OR. She was the first of 6 children to the family. Punkin grew up in Idahna and attended school in Detroit. She started school in old Detroit, and finished up her school career in new Detroit. During her Senior year, she met the love of her life, LeRoy (Tex) Emmerson, they were married July 6th, 1959 in Vancouver, WA. During their marriage they enjoyed a full life, between kids, grandkids and great-grandchildren there was never a dull moment. Punkin enjoyed cooking for her family, especially her potato salad, painting ceramic Santa’s, jigsaw puzzles, and numerous sewing and crochet projects for the family over the years.Punkin worked at LaVelle’s in Amity for many years. When the family decided to move to Texas, Punkin continued to sew at a shop in Andrews, TX. The family eventually moved back to Oregon. Punkin then decided to work for herself making custom draperies and reupholster furniture. Punkin is proceeded in death by her loving husband, Tex Emmerson, a grandson, and a brother and sister. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Ronda and Tim Pierce of Keizer, OR; son Bobby Emmerson of Salem, OR; 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; Sister Nancy Storey of Salem, OR; Brother Frank Storey of Stayton, OR; Brother Stephen Storey of Salem, OR; Sister-in-law Louise Linville of Mapleton, OR. As well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 3:00PM at Weddle Funeral Chapel, Stayton.


Gary B. Alkire – Lyons, OR

Gary B. Alkire, 72 of Lyons, Oregon passed away peacefully at his home on Monday July 31,2017 with family by his side.  Born in Berkeley California to Walter H. Alkire and Genevieve H. Baxter. 

Gary was a passionate man who enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He especially enjoyed fixing and rebuilding cars. Gary was a loving father who was admired and loved by his entire family. His list of friends remains endless.

 Gary is survived by his wife Josie of 24 years, daughter Nichole (Jim) Hewell, siblings Marjorie (Bill) Anderson, Carolyn (Joe) Huff and Phil (Diana) Read.  Nieces/Nephews Mindi (Jim) Wilson, Hannah (Ty) Drake and Nicholas, stepdaughter/son Sara Antillon, John Hitchcock, step granddaughter Gracie Hernandez.  

Gary attended North Salem High School. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in Vietnam. Among his military decorations  were the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal with device. Upon completing his military obligation  he attended Northrup Aeronautical Institute in Inglewood, California. There he received his Associate of Science degree and Federal Aviation Agency; airframes and power-plant mechanics license in 1968. 

Gary married and had a daughter Nichole in 1969. The family moved to Jacksonville, Oregon in late 1969 Gary began work with Command Helicopters in which he worked with the Kaman H43 Huskie. In 1972 he and his family moved to Salem. Oregon where he worked at Salem Brake and Wheel until 1976 when he joined the Oregon Army National Guard.

In 1990 Gary and family made Lyons, Oregon home until his death. Gary was always a country boy and loved being out of the big city. He continued working until 2007 when he retired from the Oregon Army National Guard. Gary received the Exceptional Service Medal, Certificate of Commendation and Certificate of Appreciation for service in the guard.

Gary always kept himself busy after retirement. He would teach the (hoisting class) which was held mostly in Diamond Bar, California. At times classes would be held at Gowen Field in Boise, Idaho. Gary also served his local community by running for councilman in Lyons (2013-2014). He served as the commissioner for the library and safety board and was the Lyons-Mehama water district liaison.

Joyce Ellen (Wilcox) Christensen died on May 25, 2017 in Salem, Oregon. She was born on October 30, 1936 in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, to Archie and Luella Wilcox. They lived in Alzada, Montana where her dad ran a sheep wagon. They moved to Minnesota, where they lived in a home with a dirt floor. The family moved to Washington State during World War II by troop train. Joyce attended eight different grade schools, graduating from North Salem High School in 1954. She worked as a legal secretary/legal assistant during her working years, later retiring in 1998.

Joyce and Victor Christensen met and were married in 1983, working side-by-side in the business of growing, tending, and selling Christmas trees. They sold trees both wholesale and retail from their tree lot in Fremont, California. Joyce enjoyed square dancing, ballroom dancing, gardening, traveling, painting, crafts, and watching the Little North Fork of the Santiam River from their home. She proudly belonged to the Salem Rotana Club, a small business and professional women’s club, and attended the First United Methodist Church in Stayton.

She is survived by her brothers, Gary (Sharon) Shelton, Brent (sue) Wilcox, and Glen (Linda) Wilcox, Step-daughters; Roxanne, Gail, and Tammy; several nieces and nephews as well as her beloved friend and caregiver, Jane Albin. Joyce was predeceased by her husband, parents, and brother.

Contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Stayton, Oregon, or the Parkinson’s Foundation. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the Willson House in Salem, Oregon at 9:30am. A graveside service will be held later the same day at 12pm at Lone Oak Cemetery in Stayton, Oregon. Arrangements entrusted to Weddle Funeral Services.
