Gerrit van Loon, 89, peacefully passed away on October 5, 2017 and is now with the Lord. He was born in the Holland on April 5, 1928.

It meant a lot to Gerrit to keep the farm in the family.

Robert “Bob” Warren Rogers, 95, died Sunday, January 1st, 2017 at the Oregon Veteran’s Home in Lebanon, Oregon. He is survived by his daughter Susan Williamson, son-in-law Stan Williamson, 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, extended family and friends. He married Carol Terway in April 1951 and moved to Portland Oregon to work with his father at Portland Rug. Bob and Carol had two daughters, Christine and Susan. They moved to Lincoln City in 1969, where Bob started his own Servicemaster franchise. He worked hard and had a successful business until retiring in 1984. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, watching sports, and collecting rocks, coins and stamps. After his daughter, Chris, passed away in 1994, Bob gave his life to Jesus and ensured he would see her again someday. In that same year, Bob and Carol moved to a house on the river in Otis where Bob and many of his friends would fish and he and Carol loved feeding the ducks that came up to their back yard. They had wonderful neighbors who often visited each other during their morning coffee.   In 1996, Carol died in Bob’s loving arms. He continued to reside, have coffee with neighbors, fish and feed the ducks, in Otis for 5 more years until moving in with Susan’s family in Jefferson. During this time, he enjoyed working on his coin and stamp collections, spending time with his family, attending his grand children’s school and sporting events, fishing and watching sports. Until he was in his late 80’s he drove to Lincoln city weekly to visit his friends there. Bob faithfully attended Jefferson Baptist church until 2013 when he moved to an Assisted Living Home in Lebanon. There he made new friends and was loved by the residents and staff. In 2016, he relocated to the brand new Oregon Veteran’s Home, also in Lebanon, where he received outstanding care. Bob knew how to love well. He was incredibly sweet and kind; he made everyone feel special. Bob leaves behind many on this earth who love and miss him dearly. However, we look forward to the day when we will see him in glory, where he is experiencing joy beyond measure.

Mama kept saying she would go home when the good lord told her it was time. That time came in the afternoon of June 12th. She passed peacefully with her best friend and twin sister Janette by her side. As many of you know mom was a very compassionate and caring person. She was there to help no matter if the job was big or small. It has been my pleasure to be her daughter and i am so proud of who she was. My mom’s greatest joy was her Lil Jo. She and Josie were so close, they spoke nearly every day. Josie has such great memories of their time together, as short as it was. Jade and mom had such a special connection and we always joked he should have been my moms son and I Janette’s daughter. We will have a very big hole in our hearts, but there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t feel her right here with me. Mom will live on in all of us. She is loved and missed by so many. We will see you again that we are sure of. Mom is survived by daughter Mindy Schleicher, granddaughter Josie Schleicher, brothers Roger Nicholas, Robert Nicholas, Daniel Nicholas, sisters twin Janette Dethman and Brenda Glodt-Martin and many friends and family.
Thank you to everyone at Evergreen Hospice House, you are all amazing. Mom was very blessed to have all of you in her corner.
A celebration of life is planned for Aug. 27th from 11-3 at St. Thomas Church in Jefferson on the corner of 3rd St and Marion St behind the grade school. There will be finger food.  Anyone is welcome to bring a dish to share.

Thomas Metz – Stayton, OR

Thomas Arthur Metz

November 15, 1944 – May 27, 2016

Stayton, Oregon

Tom was a happy man who lived a happy life. He and his beautiful wife Joan spent 35 wonderful years growing their love for one another and for God. Tom had many passions in his life. He was a state wrestling and football champion at the high school level as well as at the college level. Tom attended Southern Oregon University, but wasn’t afraid to let you know he was a Duck fan. Tom also had a deep passion for Ham Radio and would spend hours out in his Ham shack just meeting people from around the world and talking to them over the radio.  He would come running into the kitchen with a big smile on his face because he couldn’t wait to tell us who he just spoke to and what country they were from. Tom truly love his friends, but most of all, he loved his family. Being the devoted father and grandfather he was, when Tom and Joan had finished raising their own children, God gave them the blessing of adopting their grandson, now son, Cole Smith. They raised him and their granddaughter, Paige Smith and enjoyed every minute of it because as Tom said, “you kept us from getting old”. Family was so important to Tom. Nothing would make him happier than visits from his brother, his kids, grandkids, and even great grandkids. One of his favorite moments was talking with his brother, Ted Metz. They would talk of fond memories they shared about family, friends, and everything else that came to mind. Those two could talk for hours and never run out of things to say. Not only did Tom love when family would visit, he had an adventurous side of his own. He loved to road trip with his wife Joan and their dogs, Jessie and Tucker. Although it was never said, Jessie was his favorite. On their last adventure, they drove from Oregon to Colorado, visiting their son, Tim Smith, and daughter-in-law, Robyn Smith, and granddaughter, Tawny Gates. After visiting, they continued their journey to Kansas to visit Joan’s side of the family and proceeded to head back home.  Tom would practically fill up the memory card on his phone and camera with pictures of every new view they saw, every beautiful sunset, and every cool sign they passed. He lived his life with a smile and truly loved every moment.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Foothills Church in Stayton.

Duane M Downing – Walla Walla, WA

542909_Duane_Downing_t180Duane Downing

Dec. 1, 1925 — May 4, 2015

Walla Walla, Washington

Duane Downing, 89, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2015, in Walla Walla. Duane was born Dec. 1, 1925, in Scio, Ore., to Orville and Mabel Downing. He grew up on a ranch in Lyons with his two younger sisters, Juanita and Modena. After serving in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II, Duane graduated in 1949 from Oregon State University with a degree in electrical engineering. Upon graduation, he went to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Portland, where he met and married the love of his life, Elaine Johnson. Their daughter, Paula, was born in 1951 and daughter, Donna, in 1956. Duane and his family moved to Walla Walla in 1965 after he was selected to be Chief of Operations for the Corps’ Walla Walla District.

Duane was always very proud of the Corps of Engineers and the work he did. As Operations Chief, Duane supervised operations of all Corps facilities on the Snake and Columbia rivers from Jackson, Wyo., to John Day, Ore. Responsibilities varied widely, ranging from overseeing dedications of John Day and Dworshak dams to ensuring dam operations met the Corps’ multi-purpose goals, including navigation, power generation and recreation. During Duane’s tenure as Operations Chief, the Walla Walla District’s hydroelectric generation capacity grew from 17 to 41 units capable of generating 4,413,000 kilowatts — one-fourth of the Corps’ nationwide generation capacity. Duane also organized the federal response to the failure of the Teton Dam in Idaho and to the 1963 Alaska earthquake. Prior to retirement in 1983, Duane was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Award by the Department of the Army.

Duane didn’t slow down much after retirement, occasionally saying “retirement just means there’s no quitting time.” He helped his parents with the family ranch, traveled with Elaine, enjoyed visiting family, grew huge tomatoes, went ballroom dancing and played a lot of poker. While Duane enjoyed Omaha and Texas Hold’Em and the fact he actually earned a net profit playing, he particularly appreciated all the friends he made at poker tournaments and casual games. After Elaine passed in 2007, Duane continued his activities, often visiting Paula in Arizona, and Donna and her husband David in Virginia. Duane loved telling stories, particularly about what “the kids” and other family members were doing and their latest accomplishments. He had a rare ability to make friends with almost anybody he met. Duane was much loved and will be missed.

Duane is survived by his daughter, Paula King of Mesa, AZ; daughter, Donna Downing and her husband David Reich of Arlington, VA; sister, Juanita Brown of Springfield, OR; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews scattered throughout the West.
